if every mistake you’ve made was written in a book, would you read it?

Mine would be a 5 book trilogy with books as big as Harry Potter

trilogy..

women are more likely than men to develop a mental illness but you rarely hear about women going on shooting sprees because men won’t be with us or love us or fuck us, bottom line, if you’re willing to relate mental illness and mass murder while also refusing to relate misogyny to women dying at the hands of men, then bye bye no time for you

H* 32: Code Switching & Talking to White People (ft. Lucy)

What is code switching and what’s it like navigating white spaces in America as a black man and Asian American woman from very different backgrounds? What are the types of bodies which have more or less ability to move through white spaces and how do we codeswitch without constantly centering whiteness and an implicit desire to comfort white people? Chuks along with special return guest Lucy (ragstoreverie) - Kari is out for the week- address these questions and more on this week’s episode of Hyphenated on “Code Switching & Talking to White People”

buhhhhhhh it’s me and my monotone voice again, this time with a throat infection (can’t wait til my health insurance kicks in, yayyy ‘murrica). yaaaah not pretty. but thanks so much to everyone who listened! it was fun “co-hosting” and I had a great convo with Chuks :))

one thing we were talking about after recording the podcast that I wish I said DURING the recording (i forgot to include it in my notes ugh) is that most of the AsianAm orgs we hear about - and many large social justice advocacy non-profits in general - are NOT grassroots orgs. They have missions to fulfill so they’re not likely to support groups and causes that don’t directly fall in with their organizational missions. Lack of capacity at these orgs is a really bad excuse for not showing solidarity, especially with grassroots Palestinian activists putting out a letter of solidarity with Ferguson. THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO HAD TO WORRY ABOUT DAILY BOMBINGS AND MISSILE STRIKES THIS PAST SUMMER. Meanwhile over here, non-profit folks are concerned about capacity and organizational focus~

Really, they couldn’t even put out a two-sentence statement of support? Not even a tweet?!?!?!?

^ great point with regard to the silence of many Asian American orgs on Ferguson & Mike Brown

thisiseverydayracism:

I was born in the early seventies. I have a white mother and a black/native father, but I was raised to acknowledge myself as black. I get mistaken for so many other things, most often Latina and Indian (as in, from India). I choose to identify as black even though I don’t look like what a lot of people consider as “black-looking”. It hurts when I get treated differently by white people because I’m lighter skinned, because I have half sisters who are more black looking than me, and it reminds me that I probably got a shitload more chances in this world than they did, and the unfairness of it all galls me. I can’t really complain about this to black folks, either, because how douchey is that? And talking about it with white people seems perverse. So I don’t talk about it much at all, I guess. Until this call for submissions, anyway.
